Mini-Note Market: Gartner ForecastSunday, 17 August 2008 :: It was interesting to see Gartner come out with their forecasts for the global mini-note market last week, projecting sales of 5.2 million units this year, eight million in 2009, and 50 million by 2012. The 5.2 million unit forecast for 2008 is pretty much in line with the prediction I made in February this year of over 5 million units, and ... Read more... Previous Analysis

www.ubergizmo A VIA C7-M processor will run at the heart of things, where one is able to toy between clock ranges from 400 MHz (1.5 W) to 1GHz (5 W), and can be throttled back automatically in order to meet thermal constraints. OLPC is looking towards its partnership with PixelQi to improve the both brightness and efficiency of the screen as well for Generation 1.5, and here's us hoping that they'll succeed. OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) is a non-profit project who is dedicated to making information available for under-privileged child especially in developing nations like Africa. One of their most popular products is the low-cost XO series mobile PC, which I would say has quite striking design and features. The latest rumor is that they are going to replace the AMD Geode processor used in version 1.0 with a Via C7-M processor, mainly to keep the machine low-cost as well as filled with latest technologies. small-laptops.com I can also see the fear that the NVIDIA Ion platform inspires in some - a low-end netbook/ultraportable, perhaps powered by an Intel Atom (or a VIA Nano), capable of HD graphics (even just 720p). That would absolutely impact the traditional 15″ (and now 17″) budget market. Netbooks with their current, outdated graphics systems, are already impacting the market - the demand was there, and the products to fill it simply didn’t exist, at least at a pricepoint that was affordable by mainstream consumers. As we go forward, you’ll find more people willing to forego the 15″ laptops for something in the 13″ and below range. View complete story |

bestcheapnetbook The Samsung NC20 has a more spacious 12-inch display and a full-size keyboard, which makes it look more like a traditional notebook than any other netbook to date. Samsung NC20 is powered by VIA’s Nano U2250 processor and Chrome9 HC3 integrated graphics, as opposed to Intel’s Atom CPU and integrated graphics. The NC20 is not as powerful or thin as premium ultraportables, but it provides adequate performance and a good deal for those willing to pay extra for a bigger screen and keyboard. asia.cnet It seems Netbooks have started piquing consumer interest again, probably due to new entrants in the form of the AMD Neo-based HP Pavilion dv2 and Via Nano-powered Samsung NC20 challenging Intel Atom's dominance. The Acer Aspire One did particularly well in stores, with both the new 10.1-inch and older 8.9-inch models gaining popularity with buyers thanks to their low price tag. However, we expect another major shakeup in this niche category when the new Intel GN40 platform starts hitting the streets since Intel claims this will give Atom-based Netbooks the ability to play 720p high-definition videos smoothly.
