It’s been over a year since we first announced our sponsorship of the IkamvaYouth tuXlab in South Africa as part of our VIA pc-1 Initiative, and to find out how it has progressed since then we asked our South African PR rep Ingrid Magnusson to make a visit there and talk with Lab Manager Luyanda Emmanuel Kota. In his interview, Mr Kota describes how people from all walks of life are making use of facility and the beneficial impact it is having on the community:
“The tuXlab is used by people ranging from high school learners, teachers, writers, individuals from surrounding organisations, people working in the surrounding area who come by during their lunch hours, tertiary learners during their school holidays, job seekers, business people and the rest of the community and last but not least IkamvaYouth learners. All of these people use the lab for different reasons, some want to type assignments, some curriculum vitae. In the case of writers; they normally want to compile their collections (poems, novels, short stories and more) in a Word format. Teachers and the working class may come here to do budgets, income statements, calculations, reports and even invoices. During holidays tertiary learners come here to use the lab as a supplement to the labs they have at University. High school learners come to the lab for learning and practising their computer skills.” It’s wonderful to see that this project is delivering such a positive effect on the local community.
